The Drakensberg Mountains rise near the coast in KwaZulu-Natal and form a towering border with Lesotho, before subsiding only to rise up again to the west of the Kruger National Park, where the plateau of the Highveld around Johannesburg (around 1,500 metres above sea level) dramatically falls away to the Lowveld region of the Kruger (around 700 metres above sea level). This is known as the Great Escarpment. It’s an area of waterfalls, river canyons, huge swathes of forest and wildlife. It makes a good stopover destination if you’re travelling between the Kruger and Johannesburg, and is also a good place to combine with time on safari.
