Simon’s Town was for many years the regional headquarters for the British Royal Navy, and the deepwater harbour is used by the South African Navy to this day. This naval heritage is explored and explained at the South African Naval Museum, housed in the original dockyard magazine and storehouse dating to the middle of the eighteenth century. Many of the exhibits focus on submarine operations, including a life-size submarine control room, whilst there is also much about mine sweeping operations.
